How to Create a Thread (Conversation)

  • Click on a category (ie. 'Events,' 'Housekeeping,' 'Critiques' or 'Writing Topics.')
  • On the right-hand side of the screen is an option to 'Post New.' Click that and it will bring you to a screen where you can enter the title and body of your conversation. This part functions much like an email. There are options for formatting the body under the title. If you hover the mouse over a formatting option it will tell you what it does. The formatting will appear as html code while you are still editing your post.
  • Feel free to ignore the other boxes below the post options - they probably won't matter for your post.
  • You can preview the post before you submit it, so you can see what the formatting will look like. (ie. If you bold something or underline another.)
  • You don't need to address a post to anyone. Everyone invited to the forum will see it.

How to Respond in an existing Thread (Conversation)

  • Click on a category (ie. 'Events,' 'Housekeeping,' 'Critiques' or 'Writing Topics') to see all the existing threads.
  • Click on a thread title. This will bring you to the original post. All replies to it can be viewed underneath in order of oldest to newest.
  • A 'quick reply' box is below all the replies. From here you can reply to the above posts while staying on the same page. 'Post Reply' is similar, but this will only show your own reply on the screen.
  • As in creating a new thread, there are options for formatting the body under the title. If you hover the mouse over a formatting option it will tell you what it does.
  • You can quote someone else's post directly by hitting the 'Quote' button on the bottom right side of their post. This will bring you to a reply page with the person's text already embedded in your reply. Quoting someone is useful if you want to reply to something specific that someone said. Otherwise, when replying to someone in particular, it is helpful to include their name in your own post. (ie. @Mary)
  • You can also edit or delete your own posts with the corresponding buttons in the bottom right side of your own post.
  • N.B. the option to 'Post New' in a thread will create a new thread in the same category as the thread you are currently viewing.

Other Tips

  • There are a few other options on the pages which should be pretty self explanatory. (ex. 'Overall top 20 posters' will show you who posts the most frequently if you're curious.)
  • There is a legend down at the bottom of the screen which will show you the symbols for when there are read or unread posts in a thread, if a forum is locked (meaning no one can post or reply in it - not something that is likely to happen), etc.
  • If you need help with anything at all on the forum please just shoot me an email. I'm pretty used to being tech support!
